Thursday, November 9, 2006 Nailbat Begins #08 Okay I promised violence and yes something violent happened but you probably feel cheated in the blood and gore department. It was a tough descision as to how to portray this scene and I ran through three different ideas before choosing this one. Originally I planned to further the already obvious Frank Miller Homage to be complete in negative sillouhette showing the barrel of the gun actually plowing through Gecko's head. I also considered just drawing it flying into his eye and even the ultra censored just showing the sound effect and the barrel of the gun sticking out from the bottom of the panel but settled on showing the barrel flying off and Gecko's body afterward with the actual, lethal injury blocked from view. I found this was the most tasteful way to do it without any blatant gore but still conveying the shock value of a sudden, violent, and probably painful death. Artisticly I think this strip was a huge jump over the old one with more detail in the faces. It took a while to get them just right but the outcome was worth the effort. And now Gecko is dead and I don't have to draw him anymore. Come to think of it back when I was drawing Ubergeek way back when I was happy to kill off another difficult to draw character. So the moral of this story is, don't get attached to characters that I complain are too hard to draw. Return to ARCHIVE | |||||
