Thursday, October 4, 2007 Sketchbook Filler: Paw Study This is a simple study of how I draw the paws of my rabbits. I always made a point that these aren't some sort of human/animal hybrids but actual rabbits, whom behave like humans. As such I decided early on that I'd have to work out a sort of hand for them when they don't have thumbs. As you can see when grasping something they use the back of their paw to provide support in place of a thumb. Also you'll notice that there are no pads on the palms. Rabbits don't have padded feet, they have fur all the way around. I figured this would make it hard to tell one side of the paw from the other, so I make sure to draw the claws, curving inward to give a sense of direction. Lastly real rabbits have five digits on their front paws, and four on the back. That's too difficult to draw repeatedly, and makes the paw look jumbled so I've taken the standard cartoonist's approach of simplifying it to three digits. It's easier to get away with this on animals. Though not featured here, I always draw humans with a full set of five digits. Return to ARCHIVE | |||||
